RESOLUTION on THE EUROPEAN UNION

This was passed unanimously by the National Executive Committee on July 14.

WHEREAS Europe has been torn apart by war for centuries, from the classical Roman era to present times; and

WHEREAS Europe has experienced numerous systems of force by the ruling class from monarchies to democracies. In which democracy is ideal based on stated principles; and

WHEREAS Europe has refrained from major conflicts – exempting NATO interventions, wars of defense, and the Yugoslav Wars in the 1990s; and

WHEREAS Europe is home to many great western civilizations that colonized seemingly new world regions spanning the globe, in which western ideals were spread with Christianity, but the slave trade happened with capitalism including the value of the worker in terms of eugenics or race; and

WHEREAS no one country in Europe would represent the diversity of the EU, in that cooperation is essential for land locked allies; and

WHEREAS Europe is a wealthy continent and allies of the United States and other sovereign nations around the world; and

WHEREAS Greenland is crucial to maritime trade and defense. It has been European Danish territory for decades. America has offered to buy it; and

WHEREAS European agreements carved up regions without consideration for the existing population, reminiscent of colonialism where Britain and France held power internationally; and

WHEREAS the European Union has been a noble experiment, created with the intention of sharing economic production lines within a capitalistic market and formed in response to World War 2 to form a united Europe; and

WHEREAS the citizens of the United Kingdom did have legitimate gripes with the EU that ended in a close referendum of Britain leaving.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Europe must continue to prosper and remain close to the US and other sovereign nations based on alliances and needs of the nations; and

THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a version of the European Union must survive and reform to better allow for independence and governmental oversight; and

THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the European powerhouses in means of production and capabilities of soft power are Germany, France, and the UK, in which Germany, Finland, Poland and Greece are recognized as a council representing regional Europe from a west, north, east and south perspective; and

THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a vision of unity must be in Europe’s future since Europe stands against Russian aggression in NATO with deterrence to imperialism and the authoritarian powers; and

THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the European Union must restructure to allow individual nation-states greater sovereignty over sovereign issues; and

THEREFORE, BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that a new European Union concentrated on Europe must emerge, united in defense and shared culture.

  1. Random Ruminations Regarding Recent Resolutions:

Both resolutions were passed unanimously. Was there vigorous or even heated debate before the NEC arrived at unanimity? Or are SDUSA meetings starting to resemble gatherings of East Germany’s ruling Socialist Unity Party?

“Europe has refrained from war since the end of the Soviet Union in 1991, with the exception of the war between Russia and Ukraine and the wars in Kosovo and the Balkans” We seem to be setting the bar for the peace keeping capabilities of the European Union awfully low. And do members of the NEC believe that there would have been more wars in Europe over the last thirty five years had the EU not existed? Such an argument has to be made, not simply asserted.

There is not a single mention in the above resolution as to how the EU affects unions, wages, benefits, working conditions or quality of life issues for the toilers of the European continent. Social democracy is defined by its commitment to a strong labor movement. The platitudes penned in the above missive could have been penned by any upper middle class professional with vague liberal/progressive leanings. Social democrats may need to make common cause with folks who fit the previous sentence’s description. We should not become indistinguishable from them.

The NEC opines that “the United Kingdom did have some legitimate gripes about losing sovereignty to the European Union” It is a quibble, but whoever penned this piece should have found a different word than “gripes” (perhaps “concerns”). A gripe is what a patron of a diner experiences when the mashed potatoes are excessively lumpy.

    • Adam,
You are welcome to join the meetings and spectate. There was indeed debate, described as vigorous. One resolution was tabled as a result.

I hope to see you Labor day weekend in Buffalo. I hope you can make the trip. It is from 6pm September 4th to 6pm September 8th. Some people will arrive later and others will leave earlier. But the majority will.arrive sometime on Friday evening and leave after lunch on Tuesday. The highlight is of course the SDUSA marching in the Labor Day parade under our banner.

Also I would invite you to consider being an affiliate for your area. I’m not sure how long you have been a dues paying member, but if it’s been two years then nothing is stopping you from also being a NEC voting member representing your affiliate.

      Warm regards
      -Fmr. Rep. Coleman
