Whereas on February 10, 2022, the persistent work of immigrant advocates bore fruit when the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas voted to implement the Safe and Welcoming Ordinance — an ordinance with two parts: blocking local police from reporting undocumented residents to ICE except in cases of a public safety emergency or a judge-issued warrant, and the issuance of municipal IDs which would enable residents ineligible for any other form of ID to do basic life tasks like getting their utilities turned on in a new home, being present with their sick child at Children’s Mercy Hospital, or even attending their senior prom, getting a library card or a million other little things that an ordinary person may not even remember that they had to present an ID for —
Whereas on April 11, 2022, our Republican-dominated State Legislature voted to overturn the ICE-noncompliance part of the ordinance —
Whereas the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas still has the authority to issue and distribute the municipal IDs, but has yet to move forward with this —
Therefore, Social Democrats, USA of Kansas City, Kansas urges Mayor Tyrone Garner and the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas to step up for our hardworking, taxpaying neighbors in need of an ID and issue these IDs and get them out to the people!
