Statement from the Chairs:

We have received some comments that our use of language in referring to transgender people like Katherine and Seamus was incorrect and even offensive. Admittedly, this is new territory for us. We apologize for any offense. We have re-crafted the statement as follows:

Recent bomb threats at the University of Pittsburgh have led authorities to question Seamus Johnston and Katherine Anne McCloskey.

Katherine was formerly known as Gabe Ross. Gabe Ross was executive director of our organization from 2007-2009. Neither Katherine nor Seamus are currently members of Social Democrats USA. They hold no official positions and are not associated with SDUSA in any way.

    As I admitted above, I am new to the language standards regarding transexuals and transgenders. What I learned today is that the terminology is not without controversy. While reading the blog entry at

    I noticed that the writer refers to Katherine as “he” because he uses “sex” rather than “gender” to select the proper pronoun. Interesting issue. BTW, that post at gendertrender has some interesting comments. Worth reading, especially if you know Katherine/Gabe and Seamus/Jaime personally as we do.

    Thank you. Yes, I know them both personally (one of them very well), and I fully agree about the gendertrender blog post and comments. I will add that I don’t consider either of them a true transgenderist. It’s sad that they are muddying the already cloudy waters through which transgenderists must wade.

    A further comment: this site has some refreshing distinctions from the several sites maintained by Jaime and Gabe. To wit: fewer spelling errors, and a real “About” page that says who you really are, rather than what you merely dream of becoming.

    Not to raise this thread from the dead, but you should know that Gendertrender is a hate site, which is dedicated to attacking and hurtfully mis-gendering trans people. I would like to believe that their hate is so obvious as to render them irrelevant, but this post proves otherwise. Would you look to the KKK for advice on how to refer to African Americans?

    You should also know that there is absolutely no reason to post McCloskey’s ‘birth name here and doing so is also quite offensive. Really, it doesn’t take much research to find out how to properly refer to trans people, even the Wikipedia article gets it. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transgender). Basically you go by the name and pronoun (i.e. he, she) that they want you to use. Anything else is offensive and needlessly hurtful.
