RESOLUTION ON AMERICAN DRUG POLICY (SUMMITTED BY PATTY FRIEND & MICHAEL MOTTERN)
Whereas the SDUSA supports the drive to decriminalize the use of Cannabis, and the laws that legalize “medical marijuana”; and
Whereas the SDUSA condemns the “war on drugs” and aspects of the American drug policy and
Whereas the SDUSA condemns the unjust, retrograde, outmoded and incredibly expensive (to local communities and states) practice of incarcerating drug users – abusers – most of whom are young people and people of color, and many are suffering from one mental illness or another; and
Whereas local communities and states all over the U.S. Have determined that our American drug policies have cost the American taxpayer billions of dollars over the years, (a total of 77 billion dollars per year, to be exact)1 when our communities, schools, hospitals and libraries are closing or suffering for lack of funds; and
Whereas our local communities should be spending precious taxpayer dollars on appropriate treatment programs and drug use prevention education in theirs schools.
Whereas decimalization of marijuana possession would lead to less interaction between police and minority communities.
Whereas the Drug Policy Alliance is doing exemplary work toward advocating for sane, rational and compassionate drug policies, and, to educate the public regarding these issues.
The SDUSA endorses and robustly supports the Drug Policy Alliance and position paper included in its package of resolutions.
